How Much Temporary Fencing Do I Need?

To calculate how much temporary fencing you need, measure the total length of the boundary you want to enclose, subtract any openings that will not require fencing, and divide the remaining distance by the width of your fencing panels. For standard 3.5-metre Heras fencing panels, divide the required fencing length in metres by 3.5 and round up to the next whole panel.

For example, a straight 35-metre boundary would require approximately 10 standard 3.5-metre panels. A rectangular site measuring 30 metres by 20 metres has a perimeter of 100 metres, which would require approximately 29 panels before allowing for gates, corners and any adjustments to the layout.

That is the starting point. The actual number of panels you need will depend on the shape of your site, the fencing system selected, access requirements and how the fencing will be installed.

Temporary Fencing Calculator

Use the calculator below to estimate the number of standard 3.5-metre temporary fencing panels required for a straight boundary or a rectangular site.

For a straight boundary: Divide the total length by 3.5.

For a rectangular site: Add the length and width together, multiply the result by two, then divide by 3.5.

Always round the result up to a whole panel. Fencing panels cannot usually be ordered as fractions of a panel, and the final layout may require adjustments.

These figures are estimates for straight fencing runs using nominal 3.5-metre panels. They do not account for gates, changes in direction, overlapping panels or site-specific installation requirements. Confirm the actual panel dimensions and proposed layout before ordering.

Step 1: Measure the Area You Need to Fence

Before calculating panel quantities, establish exactly where your temporary fencing needs to go.

For a straightforward rectangular construction site, measure the length and width of the area to be enclosed. The total perimeter is calculated as follows:

Perimeter = (Length + Width) × 2

For example, a site measuring 40 metres long and 25 metres wide has a perimeter of:

(40 + 25) × 2 = 130 metres.

Dividing 130 metres by 3.5 gives 37.14, so the initial estimate would be 38 standard fencing panels.

However, not every site is rectangular. Construction compounds, festival grounds and commercial premises can have irregular boundaries, multiple entrances and areas that do not require fencing.

For an irregularly shaped site, measure each section of the proposed fence line separately and add the measurements together.

If you already have a site plan showing the proposed perimeter, this can provide a useful starting point for discussing your temporary fencing hire requirements with our team.

Step 2: Allow for Gates and Access Points

A temporary fencing perimeter will often need one or more entrances for pedestrians, vehicles, deliveries or site equipment.

These openings affect both the number of standard panels required and the type of additional equipment you may need.

For example, a construction site may require a vehicle entrance alongside a separate pedestrian access point. A festival might need public entrances, staff access and larger openings for production vehicles.

When measuring your site, identify:

  • Pedestrian entrances and exits.

  • Vehicle and delivery access points.

  • Emergency access requirements.

  • Any gates that need to remain operational during the hire.

  • Sections of the boundary that will remain open or use a different barrier system.

Where a gate replaces a section of fencing, account for its actual width rather than automatically counting the entire opening as standard panels.

For example, a 70-metre boundary with a 3.5-metre opening would leave 66.5 metres of standard fencing. Dividing this by 3.5 gives an initial estimate of 19 panels, plus the appropriate gate arrangement.

Gate frames, posts, supports and the way panels connect to the opening may affect the final configuration, so the calculation should be checked against the intended installation.

Step 3: Consider the Shape of Your Site

A simple panel calculation assumes that the fencing follows a straightforward route. Real sites are rarely that convenient.

There may be corners, narrow sections, changes in ground level, existing buildings, trees or other obstacles that affect where panels can be positioned.

A rectangular compound may require a relatively simple arrangement. An irregular construction perimeter or outdoor festival boundary may need more detailed planning.

For this reason, the total perimeter divided by panel width should be treated as an initial estimate rather than a guaranteed final quantity.

Where the proposed fencing follows several short sections, calculate each run individually and round up where necessary. This may give a more useful estimate than dividing the entire perimeter by 3.5 in one calculation.

Step 4: Choose the Right Type of Temporary Fencing

Not all temporary fencing systems use the same panel dimensions, and different systems are intended for different applications.

Standard Heras Fencing

Standard temporary mesh fencing is commonly supplied in panels approximately 3.5 metres wide. It is widely used for construction sites, temporary compounds, event perimeters and other locations requiring a clearly defined boundary.

For an initial estimate, divide the required fence length by the nominal panel width and round up.

Steel Shielding Fencing

Our steel shielding fencing uses heavy-duty panels measuring 2.4 metres wide and 3 metres high.

These panels provide a substantial temporary boundary and are suitable for applications such as festival production areas, backstage compounds and other locations requiring additional screening.

Because the panels are narrower than standard 3.5-metre temporary mesh fencing, the quantity calculation is different.

Steel shielding panel estimate = Required fencing length ÷ 2.4

For example, a straight 48-metre run would require approximately 20 steel shielding panels, before allowing for gates or installation adjustments.

We also offer 4.8-metre double gates, 2.4-metre single gates and 1.2-metre pedestrian gates within our steel shielding range.

Crowd Control Barriers

If your requirement is to guide pedestrians, create queues or separate areas at a public event, crowd control barriers may be more appropriate than a continuous run of tall temporary fencing.

Barrier dimensions vary by system, so the quantity should be calculated using the actual width of the barriers being supplied.

Queueing layouts, corners, entrances and changes of direction can also affect the number required.

Step 5: Think About the Ground and Installation Conditions

Calculating the number of panels is only one part of planning temporary fencing hire.

The fencing also needs an appropriate installation arrangement for the location and intended use.

Factors to consider include:

  • Whether the fencing will stand on grass, soil, concrete or tarmac.

  • Ground conditions and changes in level.

  • Wind exposure and the surrounding environment.

  • Whether the fencing will be fitted with screening, banners or other attachments.

  • How long the fencing will remain in place.

  • Whether the boundary will need to be altered during the hire.

Supports, bracing, ballast and other installation components may be required depending on the system and site conditions.

For example, our steel shielding fencing can be installed using long stabilising legs pinned into suitable grass, while a ballast system can be used on hard standing.

Temporary fencing should be assessed and installed appropriately for the site. Adding more panels does not compensate for an unsuitable support arrangement, and no temporary fencing system should be assumed to be windproof.

How Much Temporary Fencing Do I Need for a Construction Site?

For a construction site, begin by identifying the boundary of the active working area rather than automatically measuring the entire property.

Some projects need a continuous perimeter around the whole site. Others require temporary fencing around individual work zones, storage compounds or areas where access needs to be controlled.

Consider whether the layout will change as the project progresses. If work moves between different sections, the fencing arrangement may need to change during the hire period.

For an initial estimate, measure each proposed fencing run, allow for access points and calculate the number of panels using the dimensions of the selected system.

Our team can discuss temporary fencing requirements for construction projects throughout the UK, including larger sites where several fencing arrangements may be needed.

How Much Temporary Fencing Do I Need for a Festival or Outdoor Event?

Festival fencing requirements depend on more than the overall size of the venue.

An organiser may need fencing around the external perimeter, separate boundaries around backstage and production areas, additional fencing for temporary compounds and crowd barriers around entrances or pedestrian routes.

These requirements should be measured individually rather than combined into one approximate perimeter.

For example, a festival might require:

  • Standard temporary fencing around its outer boundary.

  • Steel shielding around backstage or production areas.

  • Crowd control barriers around public entrances and queues.

  • Specialist concert control barriers in appropriate audience areas.

The quantities and layout of each system will depend on the event plan, expected attendance, site conditions and relevant crowd management requirements.

We can also supply trackway and temporary flooring, portable toilets and welfare facilities and other event infrastructure where required.

Should I Order Extra Temporary Fencing Panels?

It can be useful to allow for minor adjustments where the final fence line has not yet been confirmed, but there is no universal percentage of additional panels that every project should order.

A straightforward measured boundary may need very little adjustment. A complex site with numerous corners, changes in level or uncertain access arrangements may require a more detailed layout before quantities can be finalised.

Rather than automatically adding a fixed percentage, explain any uncertainty when requesting your quote. This allows the proposed fencing quantity to be considered alongside the actual site conditions.

Temporary Fencing Quantity FAQs

How many temporary fencing panels do I need for 100 metres?

Using nominal 3.5-metre-wide panels, a straight 100-metre run would require approximately 29 panels. This is an initial estimate and does not account for gates, corners or adjustments to the installation.

How many Heras fencing panels do I need for an acre?

An acre is a measurement of area, not perimeter, so the number of panels depends on the shape of the land.

If the acre were approximately square, each side would measure about 63.6 metres, giving a perimeter of approximately 254.5 metres. That would require an initial estimate of 73 standard 3.5-metre panels.

A long, narrow acre would have a larger perimeter and could require considerably more fencing. Measure the actual boundary for a useful estimate.

Do I need to fence the entire construction site?

The appropriate boundary depends on the project, site layout, hazards, access arrangements and applicable safety requirements. Some projects require a full perimeter, while others may need additional fencing around individual working areas.

The fencing arrangement should be planned according to the site rather than assuming that every project needs the same layout.

Does the number of panels include gates and supports?

No. A basic panel calculation estimates the number of standard fencing panels required to cover a measured distance.

Gates, bases, couplers, stabilisers, bracing, ballast and other installation components should be considered separately according to the fencing system and proposed layout.

Can you help calculate how much temporary fencing I need?

Yes. If you provide the dimensions of your site, the proposed fencing layout, access requirements and relevant site information, our team can discuss the equipment required for your project.

A site plan or sketch showing the proposed fence line can be particularly useful for larger or irregularly shaped locations.
